Mack's been quite verbal lately, and over the weekend he debuted a new noise - he now has a very high pitched whine when he doesn't like what's going on, such as the milk isn't coming fast enough, or the oatmeal is taking too long to mix up with the applesauce. It was cute for about five minutes, and then it dawned on me that we'd probably be listening to this whine for a long, long time. One of his caregivers, Phyllis, says he probably learned it in daycare because "all the kids whine like that." Gee thanks, kids.
He's mastered quite a few consonant combinations now, including bababababa (his favorite), teeteetee (said in a higher register), and the ever popular dadadadada. Charles is quite proud of the latter. I keep getting in Mack's face and saying Mommy over and over while making the sign language gesture for the same, but it usually just gets me a silent, wide-eyed stare. Well, he may not be saying my name, but I get a huge grin and wet kisses every afternoon when I pick him up from daycare, so that works for me.
In other news, Mack's new favorite veggie is squash, and he's now in the size 3 diapers. We learned the latter the hard way after 3 straight overnight diaper blowouts, resulting in new sheets and jammies in the morning. Hmm, maybe Mack needs a bigger diaper... You think? He's also now firmly in the 9 month size onesies and has wonderfully roly-poly thighs and belly, thanks to 3 square meals a day.

Don't worry about him not saying "mama" just yet; it takes a much more sophisticated muscular manipulation to make the "m" sound than the "d" sound--just another way of showing that being a "mama" is much more difficult than being a "dada"! He'll get it!
