It's so nice to be at home for a few days before returning to work. We're having a lot of fun, but our daily schedule - so well-honed from daily use while we're working - has been shot to pieces. Mack has been sleeping later, which is great for us until he refuses to go down for a morning nap until 11 a.m. Then it's sleeping through lunch, up with energy to burn until 5 pm, major crash/late nap until dinner, then eating and PLAYPLAYPLAY until past bedtime, culminating in fighting Mommy when she tries to rock hyperbaby to sleep.
Today we enjoyed breakfast at Pauline's (delicious french toast and fresh squeezed OJ), lots of playtime, and a snowy trip to Navy Pier for lunch and the Chicago Children's Museum. The museum was a blast - Macklin smiled from the moment we entered, and they have several special areas just for tots, with soft areas to climb, roll and explore different shapes, textures, sounds and so on. There's even a camping area with a fake stream filled with rubber fish, geckos and real water, which he LOVED. He had such a fun time, he laughed out loud and waved at all the kids and parents he saw. It was super cute. On the drive home, Mack slept hard, so we got coffees and drove up through Evanston and Wilmette to admire the mansions in all their snowy Christmas-lit finery.
The late nap blew Macklin's bedtime, though, and he was a crying mess after I laid him in the crib. (At one point, I swear he cried into the video camera, "I wan' my MAMA.") Three trips into his room, two episodes of hurling his pacifier across the room ("uh-OH"), and he's finally settled down to sleep. Of course, it's 10 pm now, so this means he'll sleep late tomorrow, and the bad pattern will continue.
So, the question is - do we wake him up early to get back into the practice of early rising, early bedtime? Or do we enjoy the extra rest in the morning, knowing that it's back to the grind on Monday?

That's a hard question. We have done it both ways with you girls when you were little. It doesn't seem to make a whole lot of difference; either way, he will be cranky until he gets back into his routine. I know that for me, it works best if I get myself back into my routine earlier, so this weekend, I will be retraining myself. Good luck in whatever you try to do!
XOXO, Mom
Ugh. It looks like tonight isn't going to be any better - it's 9:12 pm, and he's crawling around in his crib and crying. To rock or not to rock, that is the question.
